As a youngster, Ambrose walked 2-3 miles one way to attend school in Blandinsville, IL. As with many of that day, he did not finish his schooling as he and his brothers had to work to feed the family. He was too young to serve in World War I, and too old to serve in the armed forces in World War II, however, when war broke out he moved to an area where he could work where they made arms and ammunition at Rock Island, IL. He and a few others who worked there were trained to teach soldiers how to operate and maintain tanks. He was sent to California, Florida, and then Louisiana to train soldiers on how to operate and maintain tanks. Ferne Wagoner, raised in Bardolph, IL was working in a restaurant in Blandinsville prior to the war and they had met prior to the war starting. At some point during the war but between his assignments, he was back in Blandinsville on leave when he married her. I have letters he wrote her from Florida that tell about what they did for entertainment when not at work, and one of his favorites was hunting rattlesnakes at night and then making things out of their skin - such as a belt, etc. He also made her a jewelry box out of redwood when he was in California. He took her with him in a small travel trailer to his last assignment in Louisiana and that's where my brother was born in 1943. After the war, he worked for a car dealership in Blandinsville, IL which was owned by Orin Meyers, (not sure of the spelling of the owner's name). Shortly after the war, he started "Darrah's Garage" there in Blandinsville and was a mechanic (by profession) for the rest of his career. He had some land behind our home where he had started an orchard years earlier as well as a huge garden where Mom worked to provide us food, a lot of canning and some frozen. Our first freezer was one that Dad made.. I could go on and on but guess this is not the place for that so I'll stop. We had a hand cranked cider mill and sold cider, apples, peaches, apricots, and cherries.
