In 1912, in the year that Andrew Carik was born, in October, former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot, but not killed, while campaigning for another term as President with the newly created Bull Moose (Progressive) Party. John Schrank was a Bavarian-born saloon-keeper from New York who had been stalking Roosevelt when he shot him just before a campaign speech. Shot in the chest (and showing the audience his bloody shirt), Roosevelt went on to give a 55 to 90 minute talk (reports vary on the length) before being treated for the injury. After 8 days in the hospital, Roosevelt went back on the campaign trail.

Winter Wonderlands from the Past
Some love winter because of the many holidays (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, New Year's Eve . . . the list goes on), and for some it's the cold, wet, snowy, and rainy weather they enjoy. For others, it's the possible sports - skiing, ice skating, playing in the snow, and sledding - that brighten up those frigid winter months. This collection of photos shows our ancestors enjoyed their winters whether bundled up in warm clothes, playing in the snow as a family, or skating around the park. Get a glimpse into what winter wonderlands looked like from the past.
