He lived in Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian, Scotland with his wife and children. On April 15, 1885 he left London for Tasmania aboard the "Mangana" with his wife Martha (41) and their children, Jane (15), James (11), Louisa (8), Martha (6), Eleanor (2) and Elizabeth (1). They then lived in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

He worked for the India Rubber company in Scotland, and once in Australia he worked for the Tasmanian Railway as a porter.
