In 1859, in the year that Andrew Leckie was born, on October 16th, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry Armory in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, in an attempt to start a slave rebellion. He wanted to "liberate" the guns in the armory and arm slaves. Brown was captured and hanged on December 2nd.

In 1860, in the year of Andrew Leckie's passing, on February 26th, near Eureka California, white settlers attacked a tribe of Wiyot Indians on Indian Island. Over 60 women, children and older people died. Bret Harte - a writer and friend of Mark Twain - reported the news about the massacre to the papers in San Francisco.
