He joined the military in Melbourne, Victoria. Andrew enlisted in the army on 29th February 1916 in Melbourne. He served in the 57th Battalion of the 3rd Regiment during World War I. Larrad was assigned the service number 1957. After enlisting, Larrad was sent to France to fight on the front lines of the war. In 1923, he married Margaret Davis.

Larrad was assigned the service number 1957. After enlisting, Larrad was sent to France to fight on the front lines of the war. The 57th Battalion, which he was a part of, was involved in some of the most significant battles of the conflict, including the Battle of Fromelles and the Battle of Polygon Wood. The conditions in the trenches were harsh, and the soldiers had to endure long periods of fighting, often in difficult terrain and adverse weather conditions. The experience would have been grueling, and it would have taken a toll on Larrad's physical and mental health.
