In 1811, in the year that Andrew Thomas Blackburn was born, on November 7th, the Battle of Tippecanoe was fought. American troops led by William Henry Harrison - then Governor of the Indiana Territory, later the 9th President of the United States - defeated the Native American warriors. A confederacy of Native American tribes opposed U.S. expansion into Indian Territory. but Tecumseh was gone, recruiting troops, and there was no military leader on the Native American side. The battle lasted 2 hours.

In 1823, by the time he was only 12 years old, on February 20th, British explorer James Weddell's expedition to Antarctica traveled 532 miles south of the Antarctic Circle - the southernmost position any ship had reached before. It would be more than 80 years before anyone sailed farther. The region of the Southern Ocean that he explored was later named the Weddell Sea.
