My last boat trip before Dad retired. Dad was set to retire at the end of the shipping season in 1981. Families of Captains, mates and engineers were allowed to go out on the lake during the summer, and I had done that with my mom every year from when I was born until I turned 18 and was on my own. In summer of 81, mom was out on the lakes with dad, and knowing I had 2 weeks vacation in July, dad called me ship to shore to ask if I wanted to come out for one last trip on the lakes. He pulled some strings to get orders to unload in Conneaut, where i boarded the boat. The trip was like any other during my life until we got to Duluth MN to load ore. We were informed that one of the railroad swing bridges that we had to pass through in Agate Bay was not working. It would take a day to repair, and we were advised to anchor out in Lake Superior until it was fixed. I was in the pilot house with dad, and when he got that message, he went back into the charge room to view charts of Agate Bay. He decided to take an alternate route the the Missabe ore docks, which would hug the Duluth shoreline. I sat in the back of the chartroom as we went through the narrow channel. Dad, with his signature pipe in his mouth, was pacing the pilot house as we progressed. It seemed as if the boat were part of him, and as I looked out the back window, I could see mud off our stern being churned up by our propeller. We docked safely at the loading docks, and as we were shutting the pilot house down, we heard a call from a Cleveland Cliffs boat requesting a tug. That boat was some 50 feet shorter than the Cason J Calloway that we were on. I guess they figured if the Calloway could make it, they could too, but they ran aground in their attempt. That moment, I suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of pride in my father. I thought of how, years before in the early 70's, he had set up a card table in the living room during the winter when the boats were laid up, studying hard every night to pass the exam to become a captain. He attained a position with United States Steel that carried a lot of responsibility and prestige, and had done so without a college degree by his own abilities and ambitions. That pride and love for my father has remained with me and will all the days of my life.
