  • Introduction

    "Angie" was the youngest of 13 children, parents immigrated from Austria. They were very Catholic and she continued to practice her faith until her death. She sang in high school, often asked to sing at weddings. She graduated from the local Catholic high school and was a secretary for the then Great Western Railroad. She met my father, Wallace "Wally" Slightam at a Moose Lodge social event. He was active duty enlisted USN, served on the USS Saratoga in World War II. They married after one year of dating in 1947 on April 19. She was 25, he was about to turn 21. At the beginning of the Korean War, Wally got his bachelor's degree in chemistry at Upper Iowa University and transitioned as an officer to the USAF which he served for 16 years until his military retirement. He and Angie had three boys. Robert was born 1949 in Oelwein. John was born 1955 at Nouasseur Air Depot (USAF), Casablanca Morocco. Michael was born 1961 in Richland Washington. She was a very loving mother and wife, the ideal military spouse adapting to numerous duty stations in addition to Casablanca. The family lived in England, Texas (Sheppard Air Force Base), Richmond (Hanford nuclear plant), Alamogordo New Mexico (Holloman Air Force Base). Wally retired at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton Ohio where the family lived from 1964. Wally died at age 61 in 1986. Angie began showing signs of Alzheimer's dementia beginning in her 60s, officially diagnosed at 69. She moved to Seattle and lived with John and his wife Misty for two years beginning in 1994. Dementia progressed such that she moved initially to assisted living at Mount St. Vincent in West Seattle. For about the last six months of her life, she resided in the nursing home section of that facility, dying in September, 2001 at age 80.

In 1921, in the year that Angeline R Slightam was born, the silent film The Sheik, directed by George Melford and starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres (also featuring Adolphe Menjou) debuted on October 21st. Critics weren't enthusiastic but the public loved it - in the first few weeks 125,000 people had seen the movie - and it eventually exceeded $1 million in ticket sales. And Rudolph Valentino, an Italian American, became the heartthrob of a female generation.

In 1935, Angeline was merely 14 years old when the BOI's name (the Bureau of Investigation) was changed to the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) and it officially became a separate agency with the Department of Justice. J. Edgar Hoover, the Chief of the BOI, continued in his office and became the first Director of the FBI. The FBI's responsibility is to "detect and prosecute crimes against the United States".
