In 1828, in the year that Ann (Cartledge) Dalrymple was born, on September 17th, a typhoon - called the Siebold Typhoon because German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold was there and took measurements during the storm - killed over 14,000 people in Kyūshū, Japan. It was the greatest number of deaths in any storm in Japan.

In 1836, she was merely 8 years old when on February 23rd, the Battle of the Alamo began. A group of American settlers were surrounded by the Mexican Army, led by Santa Anna, at the Alamo. The battle lasted until March 6th - all of the settler army was killed. Historians estimate that 400–600 in the Mexican Army were killed.
