Some family memories
Family story is very confusing & one I have been trying, for a long time, to sort out. Marriage certificate tells me that on 1 September 1855 in the parish of Kirk Braddan, Anne Crebbin, a minor, spinster, daughter of Richard Crebbin (weaver) married John Lace, of full age, widower, miner, resident of South Quay Douglas, son of William Lace (shoemaker). She signed, he signed X.

The name John Lace was fairly common & many were illiterate & didn't know the year of birth. Other records tell us that Ann Crebbin was baptised on 24 July 1836 at Kirk Rushen and John Lace whom she married in Sept 1855, was a widower believed baptised 25 Nov 1818 at Andreas, father Wm Lace (shoemaker).

Many men named John Lace, one was born at Kirkbride in 1838. He appears in 1841 census a 3yr old, in 1851 census 13yrs. In September 1855 he would have been 17yrs old. Now if he was the husband of Anne Crebbin, as some seem to believe, the marriage certificate said he was of full age, which means over 21years, and was a widower. It would be hard to believe that a 17 year old being married in 1855 would be of full age & a widower - this information has to be very wrong. But how to right it now? Originally submitted, then picked up many people, then passed on & on & on & now appears in many generalogical sites as being correct. No one seems to have looked at some simple maths to understand how this could be. In addition, when Ann & John Lace emigrated to Victoria Australia, their first child was born in 1860 - 5 years after marriage & father's age was shown as 40.

The John Lace from Kirkbride also emigrated to Victoria Australia & lived at a place called Sale. At age 29yrs he married in 1868 Janet Ann Willson who was born in Cape Town Cape Colony (see marriage certificate). In February 1878 at the age of 39 years John Lace living at Sale, he was married to Janet, HE DIED. He was born in the Isle of Man, had been in Victoria 22 years & at the age of 29 years he married Janet Ann Willson, HE HAD NO ISSUE (see death certificate).

Information I find in the internet has be totally confused & leads people to decide John Lace had 2 wives & 3 children. John Lace of Sale did not have any children. He was not married to Ann Crebbin. He was not my great.grandfather. He did not have children. I am writing my family history, but it is a correct story taken from certificates & other documentation & the memories of my mother as told to her by her mother who was the daughter of Ann Crebbin & John Lace. I am concerned that information about my great.grandparents must be correct, but thanks to a cousin it is totally confused.
