THE GREAT GRANDFATHER I NEVER MET: My mum often speaks of how sad it was that she lost her dad when she was 11. Her mum worked at the Meanwood Sanitorium in Leeds nursing. She says that her dad was Welsh, but I am not sure. She did say how he went all the way through the war doing bomb disposal and then after the war clearing the beaches at Redcar him and another colleague was killed and all that was left was some remains of a watch.
She loved her dad. His wife Marjorie never remarried and worked hard and long hours to support her family, and my mother being the eldest had a lot of responsibility in supporting her.
His son now I know was called after him, and he was my Uncle John who emigrated many years ago to Australia.
The third sibling my Aunty Jean is alive and well but I do not see and she has two boys.
I am one of seven children that my mum had. Marjorie his wife when she was alive visited us regularly and loved to take us to the York Races.
