In 1821, in the year that Ann Tempest was born, on August 10th, Missouri was admitted as the 24th U.S. state. Once part of the Louisiana Purchase, the Missouri Territory had petitioned to become a state in 1818 but because slavery was an issue in the US at the time, the territory's request was controversial. With the Missouri Compromise of 1820 - which made Maine a free state and Missouri a slave state - Missouri was admitted to the US.

In 1841, by the time she was 20 years old, on August 16th, President John Tyler vetoed a bill to re-establish the Second Bank of the United States - America's Central Bank. President Jackson had previously dissolved the bank and Tyler's veto angered the Whig Party (his own party). Rioters gathered outside the White House and burned Tyler in effigy, threw stones at the White House, and fired guns. It may have been the most violent demonstration on White House grounds in U.S. history.
