In 1882, in the year that Anna Meents was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1897, at the age of merely 15 years old, Anna was alive when in the January 22nd issue of "Engineering", the word "computer" was first used to refer to a mechanical calculation device.
