Anne Hyland was born on 25th March 1887 in South Coogue which is situated in Knock, County Mayo. Anne was the daughter of Thomas Hyland and Julia Fergus. Thomas and Julia were married in Knock in 1886 and went on to have two sons, John born 31st October 1889 (Sponsors John Lyons and Rose Hyland) and Michael 10th September 1892 (Sponsors: Michael Hyland and Anne Hyland).
Anne's mother Julia was born in Ireland approximately 1854-1860, her father was called John Fergus, he died in approximately 1884-1886. John is shown on the Griffiths Valuation as living in Eden, Knock, County Mayo. I have no record of Julia's mother. Julia was a cousin on my late Father's (John Fergus born in Cloontumper -1924) side of the family . Thomas Hyland was the son of John and Honoria Hyland. Thomas's mother died at the age of 55 in 1875 and his father died in approximately 1881. Thomas's family were last shown as living in Caldragh, Knock, County Mayo.
I am not sure if Anne's father Thomas died before the 1901 Census as he is not shown on this or whether he left Ireland to find work in either England or the USA.
Anne's mother Julia paid for her to emigrate to the USA, she sailed from Queenstown and arrived in New York on 24th December 1909. Anne is shown on the 1910 as living in Long Branch, Monmouth, New Jersey and the latter part of her life she is shown to have been living in Ocean Grove, Monmouth.
I am still in the early stages of researching Anne and her family. I have done a lot of research on the Fergus Family from Cloontumper, Bekan, Mayo ("Hoboken & New York City" -Fergus family story) and will again be going over to visit friends and try and obtain more information.
