Annie Alberta (Deans) Kemeys was born on December 15, 1897 in Berwick, City of Casey County, VIC Australia to Florence Jane (Mitchell) Deans and James Deans, and had siblings Stella Frances (Deans) Glen, Florence Emma (Deans) Belfrage Brophy, Alice May (Deans) Rich, Edith Thelma (Deans) Godier, Percival Thomas Deans, Horace Watkins Deans, and Ernest William Deans. She married William Robert Kemeys, and had children Robert William Kemeys and Mavis Jean (Kemeys) Suttie. Annie Kemeys died at age 100 years old on March 13, 1998, and was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park 1187 Sydney Rd, in Fawkner, Moreland City County.

In 1908, when she was only 11 years old, a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.
