Annie Finlayson Pumphrey 1876 - 1964

Annie (Finlayson) Pumphrey of Surrey Hills, VIC Australia was born in 1876 in Riddells Creek, Macedon Ranges Shire County to Elizabeth Banks (Perry) Finlayson and John Baird Finlayson. She had siblings Elizabeth Finlayson, William Patterson Finlayson, Mary Finlayson, Janet Finlayson Irving, Andrew Finlayson, Robert Finlayson, John Baird Finlayson Jr., and Benjamin McGregor Finlayson. She married Joseph Allan Pumphrey on October 14, 1908 in Macedon Ranges Shire County, Victoria, and had children Emily Eliza Pumphrey, Marian Agnes Pumphrey, Elizabeth Miller Pumphrey, George Allan Pumphrey, Ivan Robert Pumphrey, and Andrew Baird Pumphrey. Annie Pumphrey died at age 87 years old on July 17, 1964 in Surrey Hills, VIC.

In 1876, in the year that Annie Finlayson Pumphrey was born, on November 2nd, a giant squid - a little over 20 feet long - washed up on a beach at Thimble Tickle Bay in Newfoundland. It's still a rare occurrence since giant squid live in deep sea at 1000 to 3000 foot depth.

In 1925, at the age of 49 years old, Annie was alive when in July, the Scopes Trial - often called the Scopes Monkey Trial - took place, prosecuting a substitute teacher for teaching evolution in school. Tennessee had enacted a law that said it was "unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school". William Jennings Bryan headed the prosecution and Clarence Darrow headed the defense. The teacher was found guilty and fined $100. An appeal to the Supreme Court of Tennessee upheld the law but overturned the guilty verdict.
