Anthony Pawelec enlisted in the United States military on March 11, 1941, in Jamaica, New York. At the time of his enlistment, he was 23 years old and single, without dependents. He served in the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA branch of the military. His military service began prior to the United States' entry into World War II, and he would have been among the early enlistees who helped prepare the military for the coming conflict. He later married Maria Ann Priebil (1919–1953). Together they had two children, Anthony Michael Pawelec (1943–1998) and Rose Anne Pawelec (1948–1981). Anthony Michael Pawelec later lived in Ramsey County, Minnesota, USA, where he resided until he passed away in 1963.

In 1916, in the year that Anthony Michael Pawelec was born, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
