  • Nationality & Locations

Anotine was both very French (born in France to French parents) and very French-Canadian (migrating to New France). The house where Antoine lived in the 1600's (on land he acquired in 1676) is still standing in the 21st century! According to a historical site dedicated to the Drapeau family history, the house of Antoine and Charlotte Drapeau (with some modifications made in the past 300+years) still exists at 493 Route du Fleuve in Beaumont near Lévis.
  • Early Life & Education

Antoine was born in Fontenay-le-Comte, France. He was the 3rd child out of 5. He had 4 sisters baptized in France between 1645 and 1652. The last name "Drapeau" means "flag" in French and his father's family were leather-craftsman and tailors of cloth. His father's specific profession seems to have been a master shoemaker (See His mother's family also reportedly included tailors. Antoine migrated to "New France" (eventually a part of Quebec, Canada) as a young man of about 18 years old. Reportedly he was under contract as a tailor-apprentice although the census records simply record him as an (indentured) servant in the home of his master. Sources note that an indentured servant had a tough job - it sounds today like heavy manual labor with likely very long hours for little pay. Sources describe New France with a mostly male population. Faced with a severe shortage of single women to marry and the fact that few single women would make the expensive trip overseas (to a harsh climate at that), the French monarchy put up the money for a few hundred young women to cross the Atlantic (and paid their dowry to marry once they arrived). Reportedly the Governor of New France circulated word when a new ship of ladies would be arriving and young men flocked to the port. However, the young women were taken under the wing of women who already lived in the settlement and provided for until they decided whom they wished to marry. Antoine married one of these women who were dubbed "King's Daughters". Antoine was 21 years old and his bride about the same age when they married (although Charlotte's date/year of birth was approximate). They had 10 (poss. 11) children together although 4 of these did not survive infancy.

  • Professional Career

Upon migration to New France at age 17 or 18, Antoine was initially engaged as a hired servant (possibly tailor-apprentice). He worked in the home of Antoine Pépin dit Lachance, a 30-something who had enough wealth to boast 5 cattle and an in-house servant. According to some sources, his contract ran 3 years - at the end of which he could either head back to France or stay on in New France. Antoine decided to stay on in Quebec and his occupation was later recorded as a "tailor".
