Anton was born in Carpenter, Iowa. His father died in an accident in 1902 after which his mother remarried and moved to Silverleaf, ND.

Anton trained at Fort Willard Scott, part of the San Francisco Presidio. He traveled to France as a artillery person. He was close enough to the battles to hear the sounds but the war ended before he engaged in battle.

Anton was a bookkeeper prior to WWI. After the war he started working for grain elevators, eventually purchasing and running his own in Sacred Heart, Minnesota.
