Born in what was variously called Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, Anton Peoter Mayer immigrated to the United States and was naturalized in 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born to Matthew and Anna Mayer who had both been born in Hungary. Anton Mayer married Sophie Jakubcik (1883 - 1976) in 1941 in Ohio. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne.

On his World War I draft registration card, Anton said that he was a "tinner". A tinner, or tinsmith, was a metalworker who made or repaired tinware. When he was 39 years old, Anton said that he was a bricklayer in houses. At the age of 59, he reported that he was a laborer. He had also worked as a painter in a motor boat factory.

According to his World War II draft card, completed when he was 61 years old, Anton was 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighed 185 pounds. He had blue eyes, gray hair, and a "ruddy" complexion. He was married to Sophie and they had two daughters.
