    Antoni Tomasz Kwapisz is the son of Ludwik "Louis" Kwapisz (1878-1950) and Jozefa Pawlikowska (1873-1911). He had siblings Antonina, Casimir, Joseph, Victor, Alice, and Laura Kwapisz. He was Polish as he was born in Targoszyce, Toporowice, Slaskie, Poland and immigrated to the US arriving at Ellis Island, New York, New York on July 17, 1913. He then resided with his family in Joliet, Illinois, USA. On June 17, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois, Antoni married Marja Paszkowska (1906–1991) and they had two children together. In the 1950's their family moved to California residing in Alhambra and Monterey Park, Los Angeles, California.

    Antoni Tomasz Kwapisz is the son of Louis (Ludwik) Kwapisz and Jozefa Pawlikowska. He had siblings Antonina Marianna "Antoinette" Kwapisz (1901-1992), Casimir (Kazimierz) Frank Kwapisz (1902-1989), Joseph Kwapisz (1904-1911), Victor Albert Kwapisz (1907-1971), Alice (Natalia) Kwapisz (1909-1984), and Laura Bronislawa Leokadja Kulaga Kwapisz (1914-1967). His father, Ludwik, was born on August 18, 1878, in Chomentowek, Sędziejowice, Swietokrzyskie, Poland. Following the death of his father, Ludwik lived on a farm in Chomentowek. On February 12, 1900, he married Jozefa in Srodula, Sosnowiec, Slaskie, Poland. After Jozefa's passing, Ludwik married Katarzyna Wieczorek (1888–1953). They immigrated to the United States, with Ludwik arriving at Ellis Island, New York, on December 21, 1912. Katarzyna brought their five children to the US in 1913, and they settled in Joliet, Illinois. Subsequently, Ludwik and Katarzyna divorced. Ludwik remarried on July 3, 1922, in Cook, Illinois, United States, to Sophia Paszkowska (1893–1970). He became a naturalized US citizen on September 23, 1924, in Joliet, Will, Illinois, USA. Ludwik passed away on March 30, 1950, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. His mother Jozefa was born on March 14, 1873 in Targoszyce, Toporowice, Slaskie, Poland. She married Louis on February 12, 1900 in Srodula, Sosnowiec, Slaskie, Poland. She worked there in a yarn factory. She passed away on October 29, 1911 in Srodula, Sosnowiec, Slaskie, Poland of heart failure.

The award was considered controversial at the time because many thought that he was an imperialist. But he had brokered peace between Russia and Japan a year previous and had allowed a dispute between Mexico and the U.S. to go to arbitration, resolving the issue peacefully rather than resorting to military conflict. For these two reasons, the Nobel Prize committee chose him for the Peace Prize.
