    Ardell Frederick Egerstrom was born to Martin Leonard Egerstrom (1880 - 1952) and Beda Victoria Frederickson (1883 - 1961). He had siblings Inez Martina Elizabeth (1913 - 2018), Lester Harland (1915 - 1979), Paul Leonard Harland Egerstrom (1922 - 2011) and one other sister. Ardell was a veteran of World War II, having enlisted on July 11, 1942 and having been discharged on April 2, 1943. Ardell Egerstrom married Louise Florence Gilbertson (1921 - 2007) and they had five children: Bruce Roderick (born 1943), Rick Allan (born 1946), Sandra Kaye (1949 - 1950) , Lee Frederick (born 1951), and Judy Lynn Egerstrom (born 1953).

In 1917, in the year that Ardell Egerstrom was born, in April, the U.S. entered World War I, declaring war against Germany. President Wilson had previously declared neutrality in the war - a position supported by the majority of Americans - but after Germany declared that they would sink all ships trading with Great Britain and sunk U.S. ships, public opinion began to change. Then the Lusitania was sunk, killing 1,201 - including 128 Americans - and more U.S. ships were sunk. The U.S. could stand aside no longer.

In 1936, at the age of 19 years old, Ardell was alive when on November 2nd, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) debuted the world's first regular high-definition television service. The channel had a short schedule - Monday through Saturday, 3:00p to 4:00p and 9:00p to 10:00p. The first broadcast was "Opening of the BBC Television Service".
