  • Introduction

Arthur Theodore Berglind was my grandfather. I believe he was born in 1904 in the state of New York. His mother was a cook, and he and his mother moved to Quincy, IL, when she was offered a job as a cook at a Chaddock Boy's School. a At that time Chaddock was a boarding school for boys of wealthy families. Arthur attended the school, because his mother worked there. One of the other students attending at that time was actor Fred MacMurray. When he met his future wife, Agnes Blanche Schullian, she agreed to go on a date with him because she said he had a nice bicycle. They married and had a son and a daughter, Theodore Arthur and Patricia Ann. He retired from Electric Wheel Co after many years of service. In 1973 he was diagnosed with cancer and after a short battle, died at the age of 68. Although he never talked about his mother or family, I remember my grandmother had some of his mother's china and some vases. My grandfather never met a stranger, he was well known and liked around Quincy, due to his years of volunteer work with the Knights of Columbus and the Mart Heinen Club. He spent time boating with friends on the Mississippi River and camping on Hogback Island. He enjoyed playing cards and played euchre every week with a group of friends. He taught me and my sisters how to play many card games, such as canasta, spades and hearts. He passed when I was in my freshman of college.
