  • Obituary

Arthur J. Abelson, was born on June 25, 1924 in New Jersey. He fought in Europe during World War II and returned to graduate from the University of Michigan and to marry Ruth Abelson (nee Klausner) on June 27, 1948. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and trained in Orthopedics at University Hospitals of Cleveland. From 1956 through 1972 Art lived in Canton, Ohio and built a thriving practice in Orthopedics. His passion for running made him a pioneer in the fitness movement, and led him to become Team Physician for the Lehman High School and Malone College track and cross country teams and to be honored in 1970 with the Canton Area Jaycee Award for contributions to physical fitness. An inveterate adventurer, he became a sailor (serving as Commander of the Canton Power Squadron), pilot, scuba diver, and glider pilot. His search for adventure and for meaning led him to visit Israel with Ruth in 1969; and on his birthday in 1972 they arrived in Haifa on Aliyah, committed to spending the rest of their lives in the Jewish homeland. They learned Hebrew and lived in Nahariya, Jerusalem and Rehovot before Art became Chairman of the department of Orthopedics at Emek Hospital in Afula. He developed his department into one of the premier orthopedics training programs in Israel, built in his image, with an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and equality. Art worked as an orthopedics surgeon for 17 years in Canton and for 24 years in Israel. He also served for over three decades as one of Israel's great unofficial ambassadors and tour guides. Never one to sit still, he spent the last year of his life becoming a master wood carver at his last home, a beautiful retirement community in central Israel (Nordiya). He passed away on July 1, 2005, after suffering a devastating stroke in April, and was buried in a lovely, hilltop cemetery in Nordiya on July 4. Art is survived by his wife Ruth; brother Bob of New Providence, NJ; children: Tom (Abby) of Shaker Heights, OH, Jim (Jamie) of Ann Arbor, MI, Margie (Boaz) of Jerusalem, and Tera, formerly Barbara (Lonnie) of Berkeley, CA; and ten grandchildren: Talia, Matan, and Nadav Yemini; Aaron, Ben and Adam Abelson; Zoe and Noa Wotton; and Leora and Sara Abelson. He was for all of us a fountain of knowledge, love, laughter and adventure and will be missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 7th at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, 23737 Fairmount Blvd., Beachwood, OH. In deference to Art's sensibilities, wearing a tie is discouraged! He would have worn sandals. Donations in his memory can be made to the Arthur Abelson Israel Scholarship Fund at Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple, or to an appropriate charity of your choice.

In 1924, in the year that Arthur J Abelson was born, in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.

In 1941, when he was 17 years old, on June 25th, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802, prohibiting racial discrimination in the defense industry. EO 8802 was the first federal action to prohibit employment discrimination - without prejudice as to "race, creed, color, or national origin" - in the U.S. Civil Rights groups had planned a march on Washington D.C. to protest for equal rights but with the signing of the Order, they canceled the March.
