Arthur was not particularly religious or spiritual as I remember. He was Protestant. I believe he was raised Lutheran. I never remember him going to church but I do remember him taking the younger grandkids for donuts and watching the birds at the harbor while the older kids and parents attended Mass on Sunday mornings in the summer.

No military service but he actively supported the troops through his engineering abilities.

Arthur was a design engineer at Allis-Chalmers. He was under contract to them and had many patents issued. During WWII he designed an oxygen mask valve that allowed pilots to fly at higher altitudes over the Atlantic which decreased fuel consumption and increased flight time. This was instrumental in aiding the war effort for the Allies. All the more impressive when considering that he was born to German parents.
