Arthur Urquhart of Amesbury, Essex County, MA was born in April 1886 to Nettie M Currier and Frederick Urquhart. He had siblings George Andrew Urquhart, Lillian Urquhart, and Edward William Urquhart. He was in a relationship with Emma G Schlief, and had children Mary Hellen Urquhart, Mabel Nettie Urquhart, Dora M Urquhart, and Beatrice Bernice Urquhart. Arthur Urquhart died at age 80 years old in May 1966 in Amesbury.

In 1886, in the year that Arthur Urquhart was born, on February 14th, the first train left Los Angeles for the East -by the way of the transcontinental railroad - with a cargo of oranges. Due to irrigation and the import of water, Los Angeles was the ideal place to grow oranges - which became a popular addition to Christmas stockings.

In 1897, Arthur was only 11 years old when on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".
