    Arthur William Kunkelman was born to Howard Kunkelman (1871 - 1942) and Sara B. "Sadie" Steffy (1874 - 1909). Both parents were born in Pennsylvania. He had three brothers: Walter, Albert, and Herbert. Arthur Kunkelman married Margaret Elva Hoffman (1907 - 1988) in October of 1924. They had one son, Arthur Edward Kunkelman. On his World War II draft card, Arthur was described as being 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 197 pounds. He had brown eyes, black hair, and a "ruddy" complexion.

Scurvy and rickets were both huge problems in sailors that were at sea for extended time and the addition of vitamin C, vitamin D, and calcium in their diets helped eradicate the problem.

In 1943, at the age of 37 years old, Arthur was alive when on September 3rd, the Armistice of Cassibile was signed in Sicily. Under the terms of the Armistice, Italy surrendered to the Allied Powers. After the Armistice was made public on September 8th, Germany attacked and occupied Italy. It took 20 months of fighting for the Allies to reach the northern borders of Italy.
