Asahel Warwick Gridley was born to Frank Edward Gridley (1885 - 1942) and Rhoda Jane Warwick (1884 - 1966). His father was born in Idaho and his mother was born in Ohio. He had four sisters, including Francis E. (born 1914) and Dorothy J. (born 1923), and one brother, Horace.

A veteran of World War II, Asahel joined the United States Marine Corps in 1942 and served as a gunnery sergeant on Guadalcanal.

He worked breaking horses in the Gridley family business. and spent most of his life as a rancher and independent truck operator after working for fifteen years for Idaho Power on the maintenance crew.

Asahel Gridley married Aleita L Inman in September of 1943 in Reno, Nevada. They had four children, including Gary Lee Gridley (1944 - 2005). They divorced on February 25, 1966 in Lincoln, Idaho. Asahel then married Doris Maxine Brown (1924 - 2019) in Sonoma, California. On his 1940 World War II draft card, Asahel was described as being 21 years old and having brown eyes, brown hair, and a "dark" complexion.
