We called her Aunt Avra. She lived next door to my house at 6410 16th Avenue, Brooklyn in the 1940's. She taught my mother, Anna Pomata to make finikia cookies. They became our Christmas tradition for a lifetime. I was a child and Avra gave me plenty of hugs. She had a melodious voice. She had a nickname for me: Helenaki. Till today my sister still calls me that! I remember when the war ended, was it George or Socrates who came home, so handsome in uniform? When my father was killed in a tragic accident, it was Uncle John who stopped the policeman at our door and assumed the dread task of telling my mother. Bless them both. Bless you all.
