Axel Berg Gravem of Orleans, Barnstable County, MA was born on November 29, 1895 to Gunnar Gravem and Inga (Berg) Gravem. He married Joyce (Buchanan) Gravem in Boston, Suffolk County United States, and they were married until Joyce's death in June 1972. Axel Gravem died at age 87 years old in September 1983 at Concord, N.H. 6 Ridge Road, in Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire United States, and was buried in September -1987 at Atlantic Ocean in Orleans, Barnstable County, MA.

  • Introduction

    Axel Gavem was born to Gunnar and Inga (Berg) Gravem in Kristiansund, Norway in 1895; and came to the USA at age 6, unable to speak a word of English. He put himself thru USC by working in the family bakery in Stockton, California- Gravem Bros. Bakery; and was then awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and was captain of the Tennis team at Oxford, and was their Singles champion in 1920-1922. He was a friend of the Royal Family and played with Edward VIII as week as the Duke of York. Axel played at Wimbledon, and various estates in Britain, Buckingham Palace, as well as in South America. Axel passed away in Concord, NH in 1983 at the age of 87.

Axel was given a long lecture, over cocktails at Charlton, by Sir Winston Churchill about the salient differences between a battle and a siege. Axel never forgot the difference again.

Tennis at Buckingham Palace
After a tennis match with the Duke of Windsor, the future Heorge VI, Axel caused a commotion with the servants by climbing into the nice warm bath that had not been prepared for him, but rather for the Duke of Windsor. The Duke thought it was very amusing, "so you're the bloody b****** who stole my bath!".
