I was Ben Sanders' granddaughter, Diane Sanders, and I remember him very fondly. He was a very generous and outgoing man who kept the family business of a General Store going before, during, and after the Great Depression. During the Depression he lost a beautiful house in Joliet, and moved his family to the floor above the store in order to survive. This store sold everything, including tires, and Ben was known to sell things on credit to people who were barely making it. My father showed me how they made milk toast as one of their staple meals because things were so tight. Ben was a loving grandpa to me, I will never forget his visits to us in Phoenix, and I am sorry I could only know him until I was 9 years old. He died of a stroke in 1960 in Joliet. The world was a better place with him in it.
