Harland David Sanders of Shelbyville, Shelby County, Kentucky was born on September 9, 1890 in Henryville, Indiana USA to Wilbur David Sanders and Margaret Ann (Dunlevy) Sanders. Harland Sanders had siblings Clarence Edward Sanders and Violet Catherine (Sanders) Cummings. He married Josephine King in 1909 and they later divorced in 1947. They had children Margaret Sanders, Harland Sanders II, and Mildred (Sanders) Ruggles. He married Claudia Ellen (Ledington) Sanders on November 18, 1948, and they were married until Harland's death on December 16, 1980.

In 1890, in the year that Harland David Sanders was born, on October 9th, in Satory, France, the first fixed-wing, steam powered aircraft flew. "Ader Éole" flew, uncontrolled, for about 160 ft. at a height of just under 8 inches off the ground.

In 1934, when he was 44 years old, on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.

In 1949, at the age of 59 years old, Harland was alive when on April 4th, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) was established. Twelve nations originally signed the North Atlantic Treaty - the United States, Great Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Iceland, Canada, and Portugal. Greece, Turkey, and West Germany later joined. Today, there are 26 nations in NATO.

In 1966, by the time he was 76 years old, on September 8th, the first Star Trek episode, "The Man Trap," was broadcast on NBC. The plot concerned a creature that sucked salt from human bodies. The original series only aired for 3 seasons due to low ratings.

In 1980, in the year of Harland David Sanders's passing, on April 24th, a rescue attempt was begun in the Iranian Hostage Crisis. The attempt failed and 8 US servicemen were killed. Eight helicopters had been sent for the mission, but only 5 arrived in operating condition., Since the military had advised that the mission be aborted if there were fewer than 6 helicopters, President Carter stopped it. Upon leaving, a helicopter collided with a transport plane and the men were killed.
