Although official records say that Benita was born in Mexico, she later stated in Federal censuses that she was born in Texas. On September 12th, 1942, Benita arrived in the state of Texas, United Sates from Mexico with her husband, Moisee Garsa. She was listed on the border crossing form as a "legal resident with card valid for border crossing". On the border crossing form, she was described as being 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a fair complexion, light brown hair, brown eyes, and pierced ears. She was to reside in the United States permanently.
