Benjamin Baker of 517 S Front St, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania United States was born in 1815 in Nova Scotia, Canada, and had a brother Alfred Baker. Benjamin's partner was Annie (Barry) Baker-Shead, and they had a child Catherine Adelia (Baker) Wills. Benjamin's partner was Ann (Joye) Baker, and they had children Richard Joye Baker and Benjamin Baker Jnr. He married Ellen Baker, and they had a child John Addison Baker. Benjamin Baker died at age 51 years old on May 7, 1867 at Chester in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United States, and was buried on May 19, 1867 at M.E.Union Cemetery in Philadelphia, U.S.A. County.

Benjamin Baker.............40.........Penn.. Ellen Baker.................33..........England John Baker.................1.........Pennsylvania. Ellenor was Benjamin's first wife . In the 1850 census it states she was born in England around 1829. They had 2 children-( Ellenor and Benjamin ) but they must have died in infancy. John Baker was born in 1859, Ellen died of cholera in 1862. Then Ben married Ann and they had Richard in 1863, in 1866, Ann died, then he married Annie Barry on 29th November 1866. Catherine Adelia was born in August 1867 ( 3 months after Ben had drowned after falling overboard from his ship the brig “Ortolan” ). They lived at 517 South Front street Philadelphia. In McElroy's Business Directory of 1865 it states Benjamin Baker, boardinghouse, 517 South Front Street. In McElroy's Philadelphia City Directory of 1867 it states Baker Benj., sailor, 517 South Front st. Front Street was the first street built after William Penn founded Philadelphia in 1682. While putting a crew on the brig Ortolan Benjamin fell overboard into the Delaware river and drowned. The American brig Ortolan sunk in a hurricane near Panama in 1885, with all hands lost. ( near Aspinwall now Colon.) ( 22 vessels and 53 lives lost ) Methodist Episcopal Union Cemetery. ( M.E. Union cemetery ).

    The Philadelphia Inquirer. Saturday May 18 1867. RECOVERY OF A BODY. The body of Benjamin Baker, who was drowned on the 7th inst., while putting a crew on board the brig "Ortolan," lying off Chester, was recovered on Thursday evening, near the place where he fell overboard. The deceased was about 55 years old, and lived at No. 517 S. Front street, where he leaves a wife and two children. AMITY LODGE, No. 19, I. O. of O. F. - The Members of the Lodge are respectfully invited to meet at the Hall, on Sunday afternoon, at 2 1/2 o'clock, to attend the funeral of our late Brother, BENJAMIN BAKER. by order of the N. G. MATTHIAS HOMER, Sec. I. O. OF O. F. - THE MEMBERS OF MOUNT Zion Encampment, No. 24, and the Order in general are requested to meet at the Hall, Third and German streets, to-morrow ( Sunday ) afternoon, at 3 o'clock, to attend the funeral of BENJAMIN BAKER. By order of C. P. JNO. WINTERBOTTOM, Scribe. ( I. O. O. F. ) Independent Order Of Odd Fellows. ( German street is now called Fitzwater )
