2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Benjamin

Benjamin was called:"Benny" by the people close to him. He had a part time hobbie. He had a huge collection of pennies that he would spend endless hours searching for wheat pennies. I cannot express enough how comical and unique that my grandfather Zadie was. The English language lacks a description of this zany character that perhaps the Hebrew language has.He had a beautiful and talented grandchild named Paul. Paul was his first grandchild and died violently at age 12 by no fault of his own. Paul's death was labeled a "suicide" but, was sadly murdered. Paul was a strong and patriotic little man with exceptional talents in the esp. in the area of art. Paul had received recognition from the WHITE HOUSE, thru a yellow envelope in the mail in 1995. Paul was the only brother of Vanessa Pierce and was her eldest sibling. Zadie had a collection of Indian statutes that he was extremely proud of. He enjoyed munching loudly on green kosher pickles. He enjoyed raking his Groton property's fall leaves and burning them released a pleasant odor into the atmosphere which to this day is a fond memory of mine. I enjoy the summer season, but when fall comes around memories of Zadie surface. He once gave me a gold ring that resembled castle brick, and the gem in the stone was big, bright and no doubt precious. He once gave me a fur sleeveless jacket, the type that Sonny Bono wore.He got a charge out of sticking out his bottom front teeth to his beloved grandchildren, in jest. His mother was from Poland and his father was from Russia. He had a sister Lillian that I met. She was talkative and she had a creative nature. The bed's headboard was exceedingly tall and looked like it had previously belonged to royalty because it was " out of this world" in a descriptive nature. He died his hair pitch black and it made this unique man look 40 years of age when he was a man much younger. He did not like snakes creeping up on him, as Groton is full of them being in a woodland area.He referred to his wife as :Tun:,as she was French and Canada. He died of an aneurysm. Strangely so,He had a relative that was a neurosurgeon at Mass. General hospital, in Boston Ma.He and my grandmother Rose were married for 70 years in which he preceded her in dying.( Not at all bad for only knowing each other for 7 days before tying the knot)! He worked for a period at the docks in the 1940's. I was told that those barrels contained hazardous wastes as the bottoms fell out of them as he worked with them.Liquid oozed out from under the barrell as he worked. My grandmother thought that these hazardous wastes wee absorbed into his pores because their youngest and only daughter Barbara was born with deformities that she struggled with her whole life until her untimely departure at aged 27.Her death would lead to a string off Helfant deaths. His daughter-in-law Sue's death followed by a violent murder in Chelsea, Ma.1977, than Sue's husband David Zadie's 2nd child died the same way he did or so it say's on paper.Than my father died at age 29 and his diet was close to kosher and Dad was strong and athletic. My grandfather was not a tall man, perhaps 5'8 soaking wae. If you were ever in need of fun excitement "Benny" was the Man for the job1 Thank you Zadie for your hume time you had shown me. Benny now resides on a shelf in the Goton property he once owned in the care of his genius son Stephen.

This man was my grandfather. I am proud to say that he was a unique individual in a class all his own. He had a rock hard stomach from his boxing. He sported a dark reddish deep tan We'd sit in an old abandoned parked car and he'd read his newspaper and as a small child I would sit behind the steering wheel and he'd tell me to drive to california, with his lit cigar daggingling from his mouth. When he wasn't busy engrossing himself in the current events of the daily newspaper, he would house paint. I'd watch him climb up the ladder in his black velvet disco pants and he'd lather up in oil and paint away. This man was a character. He also enjoyed local discos at chelsea, ma. "The Real McCoys" was his favorite phrase. He once told me that we were Indians. I was later to discover by his wife Rose that we were Jewish. I think that persecution of our race lead him to be creative taking on other nationality labels in order to fit in to avoid persecution. In order to marry Rose in 1939 he told her he was Italian in order for her to marry him, which they did on Valentines Day 1939 one week after courting. He shot the tires off her then boyfriends car and they were then to be husband and wife shortly afterwards. He would get upset when my grandmother would sneak him pork. He was hard of hearing and would call me cherry lynne, instead of Sherry Lynne. Once I fell and he was the first family member to com to my aid. Later on in life, before his death I was separated from the family and he would bug everyone about my whereabouts. He did come to see me and that was the last time I ever seen Zadie. He produce successful children. A carpenter son Thomas with a flourishing company in Groton, Ma. A son David who owned a tavern in Chelsea and also a Russian bath. A son Stephen who graduated from M.I.T. and speaks 5 languages, and currently owns a publishing company. His only daughter Barbara who died at 27 who was nurse's aid in Lowell,Ma. I remember when aunt Barbara died he dressed up in full tails and top hat to see her, but she was dead when he made it to the hospital to see her. He disappeared for days and no one knew where he went. His eldest granddaughter sherry married 5 times and became a marathon runner, long distance swimmer, Reverend, speaking languages and a political activist. His granddaughter Michelle married and had children as well as Melissa, Regena, David, and Natasha, also a Vanessa. Great grandchild Vanesa Pierce of Gardner, Ma. Her 4 Puerto Rican children Mya, Ja'yna, Javien, and Janessa. Also,a recent great great grandchild Shylar from Mya . His wife Rose once told me , my grandmother Boobie, that he almost hit a woman on his way to introduce her to his mother claiming that :"Those damn Jews are always in the middle of the road". So, she sat down and waited in an empty house for his mother to arrive. In walks the woman he almost ran over. Rose worked at he Old Howaed in Boston as a chorus girl, being gypsy Rose Lee's top girl. Life was colorful under the Helfant family roof and I am damn proud to have been an offspring from the loins of Benjamin Eli Helfant.
