Bernard's family came from eastern Europe in the area of northern Germany/Poland that was known as Prussia. His mother, Victoria Buschatz came to the United States when she was about 18 years old. Bernard was born in Milwaukee to Victoria and Frank Wirsbitzki in 1899. There were 5 boys in the family. Frank, Thomas and Bernard who lived to adulthood. Laurentius (Lawrence) and another brother may have died during the flu epidemic of 1918 or earlier.

Bernard was born in Milwaukee, WI and lived his entire life there until the last year or so when he lived with his son, Paul, and family in Greendale, WI.

Bernard went to St. Lawrence Grade School located at South 27th Street and Greenfield. He graduated from 8th grade, but did not attend school after that except courses related to his occupation.

Bernard was a practicing Catholic as an adult and attended St Lawrence Catholic Church located at 27th and Greenfield.

Bernard served in the navy during World War I on the troop transport ship USS Pocahontas He was a boiler man, shoveling coal into the furnace to create the steam that powered the ship

Bernard was a machinist/ foreman at Modern Machine Works in Cudahy. When he was young he worked at Nash Motors.

Bernard was a pitcher with the Red Star Yeast baseball team. Al Simmons, a baseball hall of famer was on the same team. He was a very good bowler, semi-professional, and bowled under the name Benny Wood.
