When I was growing up, Bertha Kjar was not only my neighbor, but also my 5th grade elementary school teacher. She was a wonderful lady and very capable teacher. I attended Jackson Elementary School in Atlantic, Iowa in the 1950's and I'm sure that she also taught at least two of my four brothers, and possibly my two younger sisters. We lived on Poplar Street and her home was directly across the street and two houses south of ours. I vividly remember her home, as it sat back a little from the street and had a long staircase that led up to her porch. Her father often sat on the porch, rocking in a rocking chair and loudly singing. The home is still there, as I drove past it last month when I visited my 95 year old mother, who still lives in Atlantic. I knew the Kjars were Danish, which was a connection to my Danish heritage; maybe that is why I remember them so well. I could possibly find a few yearbook photos of her, but it may take some time to find them. Please let me know if you get this message about my great teacher, Bertha Kjar.
