She had siblings William Edward Henderson, David John Henderson, James Henderson, Bernice Victoria Henderson, Beatrice Cargill Henderson, Beryl Austin Henderson, Myrtle Moyle Henderson, and Rupert Seddon Henderson. She married Edmund John Thompson in 1921, and had a child Margery Bertha Thompson. Bertha Thompson died at age 71 years old on February 13, 1964 in Elwood, Port Phillip City County.

Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

In 1908, Bertha was 16 years old when a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.
