Birdie Rathbun was my great-grandmother. She has many descendants. I visited her when she was very late in years, in - oh, I think we would call it an extended care facility today. She was in very good health and of sound mind, but had very little vision left. She'd had cataracts and surgery to remove the blurred lenses, but the cataracts had returned on her corneas, and back then they did not, I think, do corneal transplants on people in their late eighties. She was an avid gardener and had tended the flowers and garden for the facility until her vision failed her. She was a painter in oils, and gave me two of her pictures. One had been ruined by water, but I did not tell her that. The other I still have and cherish. She was an energetic, bouncy sort of woman and from my last memory of her, enormously good-humored and loving of her family and friends.
