In 1823, in the year that Bridget Biddy (Scanlen) Hackett-Gross was born, President James Monroe first introduced the Monroe Doctrine in his State of the Union address. He didn't deliver the speech personally - it was written and delivered to Congress. The Doctrine said that any European attempts to re colonize the Americas would be considered a hostile act towards the United States. It also stated that the US wouldn't interfere with any European colonies and wouldn't interfere with any European affairs.

In 1832, she was merely 9 years old when on August 2nd, the Bad Axe Massacre ended the last major Native American rebellion east of the Mississippi River. The Massacre was the last battle of the war between white settlers and militia in Illinois and Michigan Territory and the Sauk and Fox tribes. 400 - 500 of the Native American warriors were killed outright. Some escaped but were soon killed by Sioux, who were working with the US soldiers.
