Bruce R. Boden, 80, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, June 13, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born Oct. 21, 1921, in Allegany, Md., he was the son of the late Frank and Emma Robison Boden. He retired from Mack Trucks in 1981, after 20 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Elva Morse Boden; two daughters, Nancy Boden of Michigan and Janet Boden of Myersville, Md.; two sons, Eddie Boden of Clear Spring and Robert Boden of Hagerstown; four sisters, Mildred Snow of Hancock, Regina Ward of Clearville, Pa., and Ruth Spangler and Leona Austermiller, both of Ohio; two brothers, Ralph Boden of Indian Springs and Merle Boden of Ohio; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Services will be Tuesday at noon at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, Hagerstown. Paster Bill L. Clear will officiate. Burial will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery The family will receive friends Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association, 3120 Timanus Lane, Suite 106, Baltimore, MD 21224. Hagerstown Herald Mail June 16, 2002

In 1921, in the year that Bruce R Boden was born, the silent film The Sheik, directed by George Melford and starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres (also featuring Adolphe Menjou) debuted on October 21st. Critics weren't enthusiastic but the public loved it - in the first few weeks 125,000 people had seen the movie - and it eventually exceeded $1 million in ticket sales. And Rudolph Valentino, an Italian American, became the heartthrob of a female generation.

In 1935, at the age of merely 14 years old, Bruce was alive when on August 14, the Social Security Act was signed into law. The purpose was to "provide federal assistance to those unable to work". The law established the Social Security Administration whose primary focus was to "provide aid for the elderly, the unemployed, and children". The Act survived many Supreme Court challenges and the Administration continues until today.
