BRYANT SCHMUDE was a descendant of the SCHMUDE"s who immigrated from Pomerania, Poland up near The Baltic Sea and parts of what is today Northern Germany to settle in Pittsburgh's Woods Run Valley by 1894. No SCHMUDE's appear on Pittsburgh or Allegheny City census records before 1894. The family first came to note after BALZAR SCHMUDE (((spelled ZMUDA))) in the old text, fought in a battle with Mongolian Tartars in 1514. His heroic deeds were rewarded with notable land grants in Pomerania which were confirmed upon him and his warriors in January 1515. Hence the family was thereafter dubbed vonSCHMUDE or vonZMUDA. In the old text, the Z had a small dot over it and was pronounced "Sch". All ZMUDA's and SCHMUDE's are of the same family. So SCHMUDE=ZMUDA. There is even a village in Poland called Zmuda. All SCHMUDE's of SW Pennsylvania including those who latter lived in the Munhall//Homestead area and some who ended up in Northern Pennsylvania including Titusville, Oil City and Erie are all of these same Woods Run origins. All are SCHMUDE cousins. There were other distant cousins who immigrated to Wisconsin, Northern Illinois and later to other places in the United States. There are even SCHMUDE cousins who came to live NSW Australia.
Early Life & Education

BRYANT SCHMUDE's early years were spent east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in Dooker;s Hollow--a narrow ravine which separated North Braddock and Bessemer Terrace. He was raised in an old house located at 708 O'Connell Blvd directly under the Dooker's Hollow Bridge. From first until sixth grade, he attended Hartman Elementary School in North Braddock. Apparently he was moved to live for a few years in Southern New Jersey. Little is clear after that time.

Bryant Schmude, Pennsylvania

Created in 1994 by Bryant Schmude ("MR CONDUCTOR") is the unique MR CONDUCTOR Birthday Trolley operation in SW Pennsylvania. Here after two decades of educating and entertaining youngsters of any age--is Schmude shown with a 1947 PCC type streamliner class electric trolley which he decoared as a Birthday Car for 5-year old Miriam. The sign is handmade...it is hallmark of Schmude's creation.

BRYANT SCHMUDE is best known as "MR CONDUCTOR" on the historic electric railway system in SW Pennsylvania/USA. He is a published author of numerous articles as well as the creator of the popular Birthday Trolley operation at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum Railway operating in Washington County, PA. Schmude's colorful interaction with the public along with his skillful playing of his tiny Prussian Banjo has made his efforts a joy in which to partake.

He was born in Brooklyn, NY however grew up--from the age of 2--in Dooker's Hollow-North Braddock located east of Pittsburgh, PA in the shadows of the once mighty J.Edger Thomson Steel Mill.

The photo shows MR CONDUCTOR with some delighted passengers aboard a 1947 electric trolley car which Schmude was operating for a special birthday run. (Names of passengers not given.)
