Calvin J. Boyd was born in Oroville, Alabama . He was the second son of Julius and Emmaline Boyd. Both of his parents were sharecroppers. Julius Sr. his father was an herbalist as was his father who taught him. Julius was a friend and contemporary of George Washington Carver who taught farmers through the Tuskeegee farmers extension program. Calvin was the second of five children: Julius, JR. (Bud), Levi, Emmaline, and last sister whose name I don't recall at the moment. Calvin Married Clara Johnson who was born in Arteja, Mississippi on the indian reservation of the same name, Arteja. Calvin and Clara had 6 children: Christine, Lettie, Anna Louise, Clarice, William, And Josephine, all of whom were born in Selma, Alabama. Calvin Had a host of grandchildren great grand children and great great grandchildren before his passing in September of 1989 after having spent the remainder of his life with his grandson Jimm Hayes in Oakland, California. Other grandchildren included: Charles and Robert Blackmon, Alvin, Jimm, and Mary Louise Hayes, Ashiq, Junaid Hazel, and Anna Mughni, Kay, Terry, Gary, Calvin, and Beverly, Gary and Joey Boyd, Marsha and William Boyd Jr, As a young man Calvin practiced the trade passed on to him by his father. He made and sold herbal remedies throughout Dallas County Alabama before becoming employed by Pilcher & Mcbride who started a drugstore on Broad Street in the center of town, in Selma in 1931.However, due to his refusal to sell the formulas to the proprietors he was forced to leave Selma for fear of losing his life. He left Selma and made his way to mobile where he stayed until he was able to save enough money to make his way to Cincinnati where he landed at the famous Union Station in the west end of town. He immediately took up residence in the community nt far from the train station and found work in the Beau Brumel tie company as a janitor. But calvin was very enterprising unknown to most of his family and friends. He was very good with numbers and finance. It wasn't long before he was providing loans to executives who purchased ties from Beau Brumel.
