Carl had a natural ability to take things apart, figure out how they worked, fix them if they needed it, and put them back together. His aunt once wrote this story in a letter: Upon hearing that she would be coming for a visit, Carl's mother asked him what he would do when his aunt came. He replied that he planned to take the engine out of his truck and rebuild it on the kitchen table. This illustrates both his talent for mechanics and his rather dry sense of humor. Carl joined the armed forces on Dec. 7, 1941. He served in the Flying Tigers under Maj. General Claire Lee Chennault. He would say that he "flew the hump" but would not talk much about the war. The Flying Tigers had a secret mission that has not been totally reveled even to this day. Carl was a raido operator on the aircraft and may have also used his mechanic skills there. After the war, he worked for Slick Airways in San Antonio, Texas. Carl loved both airplanes and San Antonio. He lived there for the rest of his life. He built a house at 113 Foxhall Lane. It stood for more than 60 years. When Slick Airways went out of business, Carl took a job at Eastern Airlines. He worked there as a mechanic for almost 30 years. Eastern went out of business a few years after Carl died. Carl was always building things or restoring old cars. He was a hard worker and passionate about what he did. But I think his first and best passion was fishing. He was happiest on the lake or river, casting for a catch. On one of his trips to Alaska, he went on salmon fishing expedition and caught a nice big salmon. The picture of him and his fish is was a treasured momento for him.
