Carl Henry DeVries' History: 1899 - 1962

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Carl was the son of John B. DeVries and Eelkje Wiebes Van der Vlugt DeVries who were both immigrants from Drachten, Smallingerland, Friesland, Netherlands. His father immigrated as an adult. His mother immigrated in 1873 as a child of 3 with 3 younger siblings including 1 set of twins and their parents, also from Drachten, Wiebe and Sada Jans Van der Meulen Van der Vlugt. They travelled cross-country in a covered wagon to reach Salt Lake City to follow the Mormon religion. However, they were not previously aware of the practice of polygamy which was still legal there at that time (this was prior to the Battle of Little Big Horn and many other events which affected travel to and from the west). In order to leave Salt Lake City and the religion, the family was forced, with the aid of a blacksmith, to obtain another wagon and leave town in the middle of the night. They came back as far as Iowa and settled in Lamoni. Lamoni had several people of the Latter Day Saint religion and Joseph Smith had lived there for a time prior to his death. Most of the children grew up into that faith. Carl was prepared to enlist to fight in WW I, but the war ended just as he was preparing to do so in November, 1918. His first wife was Violet Hester Smith. Together they had 5 children : Ella Deane, Evelyn Lee, Margaret Ann, John David and James Henry. Violet died in 1949 at the age of 44 or 45 if an aneurism or something of the sort. On 4th January, 1952, Carl married Anna JANE Anderson Duffield whose first husband, Leland Duffield had been killed on Okinawa 14 April, 1945. Together, they had one daughter, Carla Jane (named for her parents).in 1956. They lived on the farm where Jane had grown up and which had belonged to her parents by then deceased. In the winter of 1961-1962, Carl became ill with lung cancer. They thought the cancer in his lungs had been cured, but by that time, it had spread to his brain and to his digestive system. He died 19 days after Carla's 6th birthday on 27th July, 1962. Carl's funeral was large as he had many family and friends in the community and was well respected as a good, hard-working and good natured man who was always willing to lend a hand to others in need. On an ironic note, Carl's father died at age 62 as did Carl and his son James who died 14 March, 2005, Carl's oldest daughter died on 27th June, 2003. His siblings and many of their children have also passed on. I am his daughter with Jane. I have no relationship with the remaining children of his first marriage and do not want one. Unfortunately, they did not inherit many of Carl's good traits and kind-heartedness. His son James and I were different than the others and were close for many years. Eventually the deceptive practices of the other members of the family gave James some inaccurate information which caused a strain on our relationship, but I believe we were still somewhat close at the time of his passing as he had learned of some of their deceptions.
