  • Introduction

    Carl George Mammel's father was Charles Mammel (1877 - 1946) and his mother was Alwina Mammel (1876 - 1960). When Carl was 35, he completed his draft registration card for World War II. He was working for Proctor and Gamble and living in Omaha, Nebraska. His next of kin was his wife, Bertha Marie Mammel. Otto was 5 feet, 6 inches, weighed 140 pounds, and had blue eyes and blonde hair. His complexion was "light". Carl married Bertha, who died in 1976. In 1922, he married Lois Roth Benesh. Lois survived him. He had worked for Proctor and Gamble from 1939 until he retired in 1967. Carl also had sons Carl Jr and William and daughter Helen, as well as step-children.     The following was published in the Echo Press, 21 Dec. 1984 Carl G. Mammel died on December 9, 1984, at his home on Lake Mary near Alexandria. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 24, 1905, the son of Charles and Alvina Mammel, who came to the United States from Germany in about 1900. Carl worked for Proctor and Gamble Company for over 42 years in Chicago, St. Louis, and Omaha, where he and his family lived from 1939 until he retired in 1967. Shortly after his retirement, he and his first wife, Bertha, moved to Alexandria where he lived until his death. Bertha Mammel died in 1976. On October 15, 1977, Carl married Lois Roth Benesh, a lifetime resident of Alexandria. Carl was a fine member of the Alexandria Community and a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he served as Treasurer for almost eight years. He is survived by wife: Lois Mammel of Alexandria; sons: Carl Mammel, Jr. of Omaha; william Mammel of Omaha; daughter: Helen Miller of Bowling Green, Ohio; stepdaughters: Elsie Thompson, Mary Lundstrom and Margaret Kalina. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were December 13, 1984 at Zion Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Minnesota with Rev. Stephen Bruening officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota. Pallbearers were Loyd Hansen, Ed Buttweiller, Roger Anderson, John Leuthner, Don Bongaard and Larry Ortloff. Arrangements were with Anderson Funeral Home.
