On his World War II draft card, Carl said he was working at International Harvester in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Carl's death certificate said that he was a die sinker at International Harvester Company.

    Carl Dillon Shindollar was born on July 7th, 1903 in Bryant, Indiana to Samuel May Shindollar (1847 - 1905) and Mary Belle Roebuck (1861 - 1904). He had three siblings: Nora Marie, Gladys Lucille, and Charles Edwin Shindollar. He also had six half-siblings: Florence, Daisy, Zora, Margaret, Alonzo, and Bessie Shindollar. Carl's 1942 World War II draft card described him as being six feet tall and as weighing 184 pounds. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and a "light" complexion. Carl D. Shindollar married Lucile B. Bryant (1906 - 1987) on August 31st, 1956 in Norton Township, Michigan.

In 1903, in the year that Carl Shindollar was born, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first powered heavier-than-air plane. They flew 4 times in one day - the longest flight lasting 59 seconds and a little over 852 feet. While the brothers had notified several newspapers of their attempt, only one - a local paper - covered it. After their 4th flight, a gust of wind caught the plane, turned it over, and totaled it.
