Carmela Frances (Wallace) Mccarthy of Melbourne Australia was born in 1903 in Clifton Hill, City of Yarra County, VIC to Carmela Elizabeth (Pidoto) Wallace and William Henry Wallace. She had siblings Mary Wallace, Irene Josine Wallace, Alice Gabriel Wallace, Lillian Agnes Wallace, Florence Eugenia Wallace, and Kathleen Monica Wallace. She married Daniel Mccarthy in 1931, and had a child John Desmond Mccarthy. Carmela Mccarthy died at age 68 years old on April 4, 1972 in Brighton, City of Bayside County.

In 1903, in the year that Carmela Frances (Wallace) Mccarthy was born, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was begun by two childhood friends, William Harley and Arthur Davidson - with help from Arthur's brother, Walter. Their first prototype - a "motor-bicycle" - couldn't climb hills without also pedaling, so they went back to the drawing board, and in 1904 their new version came in 4th in a race. Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company were the only two major motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression.

In 1919, at the age of 16 years old, Carmela was alive when in the summer and early autumn, race riots erupted in 26 U.S. cities, resulting in hundreds of deaths and even more people being badly hurt. In most cases, African-Americans were the victims. It was called the "Red Summer". Men who were returning from World War I needed jobs and there was competition for those jobs among the races. Tension was heightened by the use by many companies of blacks as strikebreakers.
