Caroline Boyce (Talbot) White (born 1829)

In 1829, in the year that Caroline Boyce (Talbot) White was born, on March 4th, Andrew Jackson was sworn in as the seventh President of the United States. His wife, Rachel, had died 10 weeks before - Jackson blamed the slurs of his opponents for her illness and death and said "May God Almighty forgive her murderers, I never can."

In 1837, on March 4th, Martin Van Buren was sworn in as the eighth President of the United States. Van Buren won 50.8% of the popular vote over election rival Harrison's 36.6%, largely due to Van Buren's promise to continue (previous) President Jackson's policies. But Van Buren only served one term because of the Panic of 1837 - which was due to Jackson's economic policy.

In 1846, on February 26th, the Liberty Bell was rung for George Washington's birthday. It is said that when it was rung, a previous crack was worsened, leading to the crack seen today. A paper of the time said that at "around noon, it was discovered that the ringing had caused the crack to be greatly extended, and that the old Independence Bell...now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and forever dumb".

In 1928, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.

In 1989, on January 20th, George Herbert Walker Bush became the 41st President of the United States. Previously Ronald Regan's Vice President, he ran against Michael Dukakis and won the popular vote by 53.4% to 45.6%.
