In 1827, in the year that Caroline Hull (Southwood) Letheby was born, on February 28th, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - the B&O - was incorporated. The B&O became the first railroad to carry both people and freight and was Maryland's answer to the Erie Canal. Construction began on July 4th, 1828.

In 1834, at the age of merely 7 years old, Caroline was alive when on March 28th, President Andrew Jackson was censured by the United States Congress, 26–20, due to his efforts to close The Second Bank of the United States - which eventually led to the Panic of 1837. The censure was expunged in 1837, after years of effort by Jackson supporters.
